What is Post Intern Familiarization?

The transition from internship to permanent medical service marks a critical turning point in a doctor’s career. At this stage, post-intern medical officers are expected to assume greater professional responsibility while navigating complex career pathways, service obligations, and training opportunities-often with limited formal guidance.

The Post-Intern Familiarization Programme is designed to sensitise early-career medical officers to the real-world demands and expectations of the profession, while broadening their understanding of local and international career pathways. The programme provides a structured platform to help doctors reflect on where they are, what skills and competencies are required, and how they can shape their future careers.

Programme Aims:

  • Clarify expectations of post-intern medical officers within the public health system
  • Introduce career pathways in clinical practice, public health, academia, administration, and specialized training
  • Highlight local and international postgraduate and professional development opportunities
  • Demonstrate the skills, attitudes, and professional behaviours required to succeed in diverse career tracks
  • Encourage self-reflection, goal setting, and proactive career planning
  • By addressing both professional responsibilities and future opportunities, the programme enables post-intern doctors to make informed decisions, maximize the benefits gained from workshops and training programmes, and align their career aspirations with the needs of the health system.

To empower post-intern medical officers to transition confidently into professional medical service by fostering informed career decision-making, professional excellence, and alignment with the evolving needs of the national and global health systems.

To provide a structured and comprehensive familiarization platform that equips post-intern medical officers with the knowledge, skills, professional attitudes, and career guidance necessary to navigate service responsibilities, postgraduate opportunities, and diverse career pathways through interactive learning, mentorship, and reflective practice.
