Notice for Medical Officers who are unable to attend Native Language Training Programme

After several discussions for last 4 months with Ministry of Health finally on 12th of February Director General Health Services instructed ET and R unit to start the procedure for Native Language Training Programme. For last 4 months Government Medical officers pointed out the ministry that around 650  Medical officers who are unable to participate the programme are going to affect the consequences according to 2007/7 circular.

There were 2 factors which was prevented the smooth functioning of this programme

  1. Non Payment of last years programmes to NILET
  2. Inefficiency of Ministry and purposefully blocking this programme for Medical officers

Finally after the meeting DHS clearly instructed the relevant parties to release the cheques as soon as possible and will give the approval as soon as he received the letters from ET and R. NILET agreed to conduct the programmes as soon as when they receive the cheques.

GMOA pointed out that meal costs should be paid by the ministry and DGHS agreed for that and therefore the programme will be fully funded by Ministry of Health. and DGHS agreed to grant duty leave for the doctors who participate for this training programme.

SHRI is thankful to Dr Anuruddha Padeniya ,Dr Naveen Soysa, Dr Haritha Aluthge, Dr Nalinda Hearth Dr Chandana Dharmarathna and other Exco  members  for their tireless help during last 4 months to make this programme a success.

NILET agreed to arrange a programme probably 1st or 2nd of March and the date will be confirmed within this week and the registration form will be publish in this web site.

Achievements by GMOA
  1. Starting a Native Language Training Programme to Medical officers who started post internship after 2013.11.01
  2. Grant Duty leave for the Medical officers
  3. Cost of the meals also paid through the ministry

Skills Programme for Pre intern doctors 2017

Medical graduates have nearly one years wait before starting internship in Sri Lanka. Skills accrued in medical school are not enhanced, but rather regress, if no clinical practice happens; most are not involved in clinical care. The technical skills needed for internship are difficult to gather without hands on practice. Patient care suffers when new inerns start due to low skill levels and low levels of confidence. There have been requests by pre-interns to address this perceived lack of skills before commencing internship. Many other countries have recognized this skills gap and taken remedial measures.

Good Intern Programme conducted for the first time in 2013 by the GMOA with MOH addresses these problems; as part of this approach it is important to allow pre-interns to practice their skills before starting internship.

We propose allowing pre-interns to voluntarily spend between 4-7 days in an operating theater setting and ETU/PCU/Wards (6 days) under the supervision of a Consultant Anesthetist/Physician to acquire these skills. A voluntary competency record can be maintained.
